We link diverse groups (academic, industrial, and early-career) to address the pressing need for energy-efficient AI systems by networking, fostering discussions, and providing training opportunities.
Established through an EPSRC network grant, NeuMat functions as a hub to bring together experts in materials science, device engineering, AI algorithms, and more. Our work focuses on connecting people and ideas, through workshops, seminars, and training sessions, so the real innovations can happen in labs, start-ups, and academic institutions across the UK.
Commissioned by the Netherlands Innovation Network UK and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, this report provides a strategic overview of the UK neuromorphic technology landscape. It examines the UK’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats across research, industry, infrastructure, investment and policy, and identifies opportunities for closer UK–Netherlands and European collaboration.
The report was written by several members of the NeuMat management and organising committees, with significant contributions from Paul Larcey (Innovate UK) and Prof Steve Furber (University of Manchester). It concludes with recommendations for strengthening the UK neuromorphic ecosystem, including investment, industry partnerships, scale-up infrastructure, standardisation, skills development and international collaboration.
