The European neuromorphic computing community has received a major boost with the launch of the new COST Action European Network for NeuroMorphic Computing (EuroNMC, CA25118). Officially approved in May 2026 and launched in September 2026, EuroNMC aims to bring together researchers from across Europe to accelerate the development of energy-efficient brain-inspired computing technologies.
As artificial intelligence models continue to grow in complexity and energy consumption, neuromorphic computing is increasingly recognised as a promising alternative. Inspired by the principles of biological information processing, neuromorphic systems seek to deliver highly efficient computing through event-driven operation, parallelism, in-memory computation and adaptive learning mechanisms. EuroNMC has been established to help turn these concepts into practical technologies by connecting expertise across the entire research stack.
The new network brings together communities spanning neuroscience, computer science, hardware design, electronic devices and advanced materials. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, EuroNMC aims to overcome the fragmentation that has historically limited progress in the field. Its objectives include reducing barriers between disciplines, aligning biologically inspired concepts with suitable hardware platforms, identifying meaningful applications and benchmarks, and strengthening Europe's leadership in neuromorphic computing and next-generation AI.
The structure of EuroNMC reflects the breadth of the field, with activities spanning theoretical foundations, neuromorphic architectures and algorithms, novel electronic devices and materials, application development and benchmarking, together with dissemination, outreach and policy engagement.
For the NeuMat community, the launch of EuroNMC represents an exciting opportunity. NeuMat's focus on novel materials, devices and systems for neuromorphic technologies aligns closely with the Action's vision of connecting fundamental materials research to hardware implementations and real-world applications. The network will provide new avenues for collaboration, researcher exchange, training and engagement with industry partners across Europe.
Running until 2030, EuroNMC is expected to play a significant role in shaping the future European neuromorphic ecosystem and strengthening links between disciplines that are essential for delivering the next generation of energy-efficient computing technologies.
