NeuMat Spotlight: What Are Neuromorphic Systems?

NeuMat is pleased to spotlight the upcoming Cambridge x Manchester Partnership webinar, What Are Neuromorphic Systems? Taking place on 22 June 2026, this online session will introduce the principles of neuromorphic computing and explore how brain-inspired technologies are helping address key challenges in Industry 4.0 and beyond.

Led by Professor André van Schaik (University of Manchester), the webinar will examine how neuromorphic sensors, chips and algorithms emulate biological neural systems to deliver highly efficient, adaptive computing. From advanced manufacturing and robotics to healthcare technologies and intelligent sensing, neuromorphic approaches are enabling new capabilities where conventional computing methods can struggle with power, speed or complexity constraints.

Relevance to the NeuMat community

The webinar aligns closely with NeuMat's vision of developing next-generation intelligent technologies inspired by the brain. As the field of neuromorphic engineering continues to advance, opportunities are emerging to combine innovative materials, sensing technologies and brain-inspired computing to create systems that can adapt, learn and respond to their environments.

For the NeuMat community, the session offers an opportunity to:

  • Gain an introduction to neuromorphic computing and engineering
  • Explore emerging applications in sensing, manufacturing and healthcare
  • Understand the potential of low-power, edge-based intelligence
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration across materials science, engineering and computing
  • Learn how biological principles can inspire future technology platforms

About the speaker

Professor André van Schaik is the Furber Chair in Neuromorphic Systems Engineering at the University of Manchester and Director of the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems. An internationally recognised leader in the field, he has authored more than 350 publications, holds over 35 patents, and has founded multiple technology companies. His research spans neuromorphic engineering, computational neuroscience, sensing, robotics and intelligent systems.
